The Founder Institute, the World’s Largest Startup Accelerator, is currently testing the demand for opening its newest chapter in Alexandria, Egypt for the Spring of 2013.

If you’d like to help bring this great program to Alexandria, then fill out an Interest Form today. If enough people fill out this form and express interest by December 2nd, 2012, then the Founder Institute will formally launch an Alexandria Chapter.

The Founder Institute is an early-stage startup accelerator and global launch network that, in just three years of operation, has helped launch over 650 companies across 32 cities and five continents. Through our part-time four-month program, existing and prospective founders can launch their dream company with expert training, feedback, and support from experienced startup CEOs – while not being required to quit their day job. Our unique Graduate Liquidity Pool also enables graduates and mentors to share in the equity upside of each class, creating strong teamwork-based startup ecosystems where great companies can flourish. We call it “Globalizing Silicon Valley.”

The Institute will be hosting a number of free events in Alexandria, including:

Startup Pitch Bootcamp on Monday, November 12th, 2012.

Information Session on Monday, November 26th, 2012.

The Founder Institute program is open to anybody that is passionate about building a technology company: idea or no idea, full-time job or unemployed, young or old, male or female, experienced in business or straight out of school. We also support a wide range of technology industries: including digital media, software, biotech, cleantech, ecommerce, advertising, consumer electronics, and more.

So, you have heard of Alexandria Startup Weekend, but what’s it all about?

Alexandria Startup Weekend is no ordinary event. It where like-minded entrepreneurs gather for a weekend of company creation. In 54 hours, you take an initial idea from the Thursday night pitches through to a mind spinning Startup company on the Saturday night.

Just don’t think it’s just developers. Its marketing maestros, design gurus, business development wizards, legal geniuses, and the specialist of Startups – the jack of all trades coming together as one, creating a harmony that can only be envied by the corporate world.

OK – so that may be slight sales mode, but it truly all about bringing together the knowledge of the local entrepreneur scene, and helping those in need to find their feet in the world of startups.

Thursday night is all about networking and the pitches. Those with an idea, and are brave enough to stand in front of 300+ strangers give their 1 minute elevator pitch to the crowd. The ideas that people like, and want to work with then get created. From there on, within 48 hours you have to deliver a product and business plan that can stand up to the harsh light of day. Mentors will be on hand throughout the time to help you fine tune the idea that was only conceived 12 hours ago, into a working company with huge potential profits in 36 hours.

Sounds intense? It is!

Saturday night is where the jury panel comes in. Seasoned professionals that have been through the startup mill many times over will scrutinize and find the holes in the plan to evaluate the chances of real world succession.

From there? Well, it’s all up to you. Alexandria Startup Weekend can only help you start your dream. It’s up to you to live it out.

Go on, what are you waiting for? Head over to the Alexandria Startup Weekend website, Facebook Fan Page, or Twitter account and stay tuned for updates to find out for yourself what it’s all about!

I just felt like writing something that is totally random and meaning less… Yes totally RANDOM… I’ve just discovered a lot of drafts on my blog admin area, which means at some point I was going to share something but after a second thought maybe i decided not to continue.. Well don’t panic, I just didn’t have time to finish what I’ve been writing about…

I’ve been pretty busy lately, you may say Business if growing , Nah just kidding… It just happen that I’ve started to like my new life style after getting married, gaining some extra weight, living near the sea, bla bla bla … & of course my new job…

So I can say that life is treating me good so far, I promise I’ll try to continue my blogging starting next year “by the way Happy Holidays”… and Hitch has left the building…

A new community deserves its own celebration. Entrepreneurs, innovators, artists and business leaders united through the power of mentorship in a space buzzing with ideas, stirring with talent. It’s all about stories that inspire creativity and collaboration, information that empower tomorrow’s talent, and networks that connect ideas with opportunities.

I was blessed by having an invitation to attend The Celebration of Entrepreneurship an event organized by the Dubai based Abraaj Capital outlined the definition of a new Entrepreneurial era in MENASA. It was not an ordinary conference, it was a platform where everybody can play a part, make an impact, learn something new, and make new business.

The celebration was structured around three main program tracks:
1- Inspire: by providing a stage presentations last up to 20 minutes where speakers presented ideas, made announcements, and discussed their passions. or by providing Passion Corners which last up to 30 minutes where speakers shared their inspiring stories and ideas. The setting was informal, highly interactive and unencumbered. Open dialogue where welcomed.

2- Empower: by providing ignition workshops and training where peopled who shared a common objective can put together an entrepreneurial project or propose an outcome by the end of the event, or have in-depth discussions and training sessions on issues related to entrepreneurship.

3- Connect: by providing sparks which were a series of short presentations where individuals introduced an idea to the community in an open and completely informal style. The format of the Sparks forces you to really think about what you want to say.

When I first saw the event program I said to myself this is gonna be huge, this is a change that we need in our ecosystem in MENASA. I was thinking to myself how could I follow all those great speakers at the same time? and they got the answer for meby providing a powerful networking device called Spotme that allowed me to keep track of the program, locate people, create my own program agenda, view maps of the venue and participate in the Celebration of Entrepreneurship (CoE) surveys.

One blog post won’t be enough to tell you all about those amazing two days of my life, so stay tuned for my upcoming posts in which I’ll talk about my personal experience and people I’ve met and have the chance to talk to on this celebration.

On September 30th 2010, eSpace decided to have a full factory shutdown on every last Thursday of every quarter, and do nothing but follow their passion and do the thing we do best: develop ideas!

It is all about a full day of innovation, thinking out of the box, gooey pizza and drinks, and yes – a lot of discussions and noise. Teams will be formed and each one will have to face the challenge of fully developing something in that one day. It could be a library, an opensource contribution, or even a product prototype, a product… it can be virtually anything as long as it is something that can be ready to be presented to the company the very next Sunday. They call it PizzaHack Day Project.

This quarter PizzaHack Day take place on 7th of October… and the day was totally fun and great. As an eSpacian Citizen, I enjoyed my stay over there the whole day do nothing but thinking about solving a problem and came up with an idea. And I was surprised by the young entrepreneurs who shared the day with us in here. Jumboo sized Pizza & Soft Drinks All day long and that sweet geeky language in every corner was just great.

At the end of the day eSpace proved that they can do it in one day. They can Find the Problem, Came up with a creative solution for it, Develop it, and have it ready by next Sunday. One of the applications made on that day was SmokeCop, a mobile application where you can spot violations in rules or something and report it. we’ve filmed a movie about it on that day directed by Ehab El Badry & staring Wael Shaban, Samer El Sahn, Abdel Salam, Alfred Nagy, Mina Haervy, & finally me.

So this is what we can do, and what we had. On October 7th 2010 eSpace produced a punch or application in one day:

Happy Eid, & Eid Mubarak to all of you. A very special Eid greetings to my wife, my family, my friends, my coworkers, my team, and to all my blog readers. May Allah bless your days and accept all your prayers during those great days.

Eid Al-Fitr is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting (sawm). Eid is an Arabic word meaning “festivity”, while Fi?r means “to purify”; and so the holiday symbolizes the purification after completing the fasting month which is after the end of the Islamic month of Ramadan, on the first day of Shawwal.

[headline h="1"]This method is deprecated[/headline]

In the last two articles, I talked about what is Ruby and what is Ruby on Rails. and what is the meaning of MVC architecture. So we kinda have a general idea of what we will be talking about in the following articles. From this Article we will not only talk but we will start to create our first Ruby on Rails Application. and to do so we have to know what tools we will be using. and what is the best for us.

IN this whole Course I’ll assume that most of you are working on windows 7 machines. Ruby can be used in any operating systems and I’ll talk shortly on how to install the development environment on your system. So let’s get started. What we will do in this Tutorial is:

Install Ruby: Ruby recommends to install Ruby 1.8.7 or Ruby 1.9.2.

Install Rails: The current Rails version is 3.0.0 which were released August 29th, 2010.

Install Database Server: For Database I’ll use MySQL Community Server 5.1.50.

Testing your development environment by running your first application.

As we already know by now that Rails is an Open Source Web Application Framework written in Ruby. So to install Rails we first need to install the language and it’s package manager.

Installing Ruby:

As a Windows user the easiest way to get Ruby running on your machine is by using Ruby Installer. This is a self-contained Windows-based installer that includes the Ruby language, an execution environment, important documentation, and more.

1. Simply go to Ruby Installer for Windows Download Page and select the MSI installer files. In this tutorials I assumed that you will select the latest version or Ruby which is Ruby 1.9.2. So you will need to download the Ruby 1.9.2-p0.

2. After downloading the installer file, run it and accept the terms then on the installation destination and optional tasks page, browse to the location you want your installed files to be located “I prefer to make a folder called Ruby on the same partition where Windows folder are”. and don’t forget to check the check boxes as in the figure below.

3. We have to make sure that our Ruby installation was successful. So we go to our Command Prompt “Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt” and type the following:

ruby --version

then hit enter. If no errors appears and the Ruby version displayed correctly as shown in the next image. Then you have successfully installed the Ruby Language on your Windows 7 System.

Installing Rails:

1. Now it’s time to install the Rails. Simply type in the following command in your command prompt to install Rails and all dependencies

gem install rails --include-dependencies

This will take a while depending on your internet connection. So you can set back and grab yourself a cup of coffee.

2. If everything went okay you should be able to see something link the previous image. at that point you have done so good. next step is to install our Database server.

3. now we need to install the required gems for rails and that can be made by running the following command in your command prompt:

bundle install

and now you are ready for the next step.

Installing Database Server:

I’d prefer to use MySQL as a database engine for my Rails applications. However you can feel free to use SqlLite3 which is by default the database engine associated with Rails.
1. Download the MySQL Community Server 5.1.50 select the recommended MSI Installer Essentials.

2. After downloading and running the installer make sure to choose complete on the first screen.

be sure to check on all windows warning before proceed.

3. After completing the installation wizard you will find a check box to start configuring your server

click on finish and let’s start customizing your MySQL server.

4. Follow the following screen:
a. Detailed Configurations

b. Developer Machine

c. Multifunctional Database

d. MySQL Datafiles

e. Decision Support (DSS)/OLAP

f. TCP/IP Networking Port Settings & Firewall Exception

Hit next then execute and wait till all check points are green and voila, your MySQL server is ready… Next step is to test your installation and check if your computer is ready for the rails or not.

Testing your development environment:

1. Open a new Command Prompt window and navigate to the folder you want your projects to be created. I’ve created a new folder named it “Ruby Apps” and placed it in the root of my D: partition.

c: Users Hashem>D:
D:>md "Ruby Apps"
D:>cd "Ruby Apps"
D:Ruby Apps>

2. Now we will create a test application with the name of “my_app” and to do so we type the following command in the command prompt window

rails new my_app

Now a folder will be created including the complete folder and file structure for your new application.

3. Now it’s time to run the server and test the application we just created. Ruby installation comes with a build in web server called WEBrick. To run the server navigate to the newly created application and run the following command:

D:Ruby Apps>cd my_app
D:Ruby Appsmy_app>rails server

The WEBrick will communicate to your localhost via port 3000. so now head up to your browser and open

http://localhost:3000

If everything went ok you should be now looking at the Ruby on Rails: Welcome aboard default page.

Notes:

The server will be closed if you terminate the command prompt window at any time. so be sure to leave that window open during the whole process when developing an application.

To terminate the server manually press “Ctrl + C” or just hit the close button.

You are done

Congratulations, Now you have created and tested your development environment. If you faced any problems please do not hesitate and post them in the comments and I’ll get back to you with the answer at once.

Next time we will get more into creating our first simple Rails application. so stay tuned and you might wanna subscribe to our weekly Rails newsletter. Till we meet again, Have fun & Happy riding…

I’m pretty sure that you by now are wondering What is Ruby on Rails? and how it can help me in creating my future web application? How easy is it to learn this language? Well, to answer all your questions let’s first start by understanding the meaning of Ruby on Rails. and to understand that term we first need to know what is Ruby in the first place…

Ruby is a programming language conceived on early 1993 by Yukihiro Matsumoto who wished to create a new language that balanced functional programming with imperative programming. So it’s been there from a long time, but why we didn’t hear about it until the past few years. That’s because Rails has adopted it for the web and make it excited language to create your web application with.

Ruby is similar to Perl, SmallTalk, Python, & LISP. If you are familiar with any of those programming languages you will find the syntax is more a like specially for Perl developers.

Ruby is not just for developing web applications, as Ruby is like any other programming language for example C++, C# all can be used for a variety of applications, desktop applications, mobile application, web application and much more.

Ruby is Object Oriented Programming Language. for you who are not familiar with the term, Object Oriented Programming is programming a collection of individual units which can each do their own processing and also interact with each other. Which means you can develop an individual code that process its own action in the same time that it can interact with other code.

Now you know what is Ruby… and it’s time to know what is Rails?

Rails is an Open Source Web Application Framework that is written in Ruby.

Ruby on Rails was extracted by David Heinemeier Hansson from his work on Basecamp, a project management tool by 37signals (now a web application company). David Hansson first released Rails as open source in July 2004, but did not share commit rights to the project until February 2005. In August 2006 the framework reached a milestone when Apple announced that it would ship Ruby on Rails with Mac OS X v10.5 “Leopard”, which was released in October 2007.

As an Open Source, Rails is free for community. everyone can download the source code, modify it and share it back, fix bugs, add features, & play around with it that is the whole idea of Open Sources.

You may now asking What is the meaning of Web Framework? Well, in brief it’s a set of software tools, pre-written code libraries, and data-organization structures created together to assist in writing a web application.

So after outlining those definitions, what makes Ruby on Rails so powerful and efficient? there are two qualities that makes creating a web application using Ruby on Rails “I’ll call it from now on RoR” a very powerful development tool for creating applications:

DRY: The Mantra of Rails, DRY stands for Don’t Repeat Yourself. Rails make it easier to maintain and keep you code clean and not repeated in so many place, so all you have to do is to make your code in one place so when you need to get back to it you wouldn’t go to far searching among all your project files and folders.

Conventions & Sensible Defaults: Which save lots of time and energy during developing you applications, as everything is very well organized on its own place.

Another fact about rails is that RoR is based on MVC Architecture, if you are not a programmer then you probably don’t know what MVC Stands for:

M – Model: which are objects.

V – View: which are presentation layers.

C – Controllers: which process and responds to events.

The MVC is a way to organize your code in Rails. MVC is DRY and takes all advantages of conventions and sensible defaults. We will get to know more about the MVC Architecture later during this guide.

Now we have a general idea about what’s going on and what terms we will be using during this guide, In the next article I’ll show you how to prepare your testing environment for Ruby and how to install Rails on it and how to create your first application, so stay tuned and register to this special mailing list which will updates you once per week about articles you have missed about Ruby on Rails Only.

It has been nearly 8 months since I decided to learn a programming language and get away from the design field, So during my search for an easy to use and easy to learn language I found Ruby. I’ve heard about it a a lot in the past few years, and maybe you’ve heard about it as well. So I asked myself what is that buzz all about? till i decided to start learning a programming language and here we go I found Ruby on Rails…

When I started learning Ruby I faced some problems, like where do i get up to date tutorials, how do I install ruby on windows? which is the best HTTP server to use it with Ruby? do I really have to be a programmer or understand anything about programming before I learn it? I panicked at the beginning from the fact that I hate code and programming so why would I do that after my 10 years of working with computers.

The start was very easy actually, a couple of my friends helped me by providing me access to their paid tutorial accounts in a major video tutorials website. So i watched the first video about Ruby and I said to myself, yes that’s it.. That’s the language I wanted to learn…

So I’ve decided to share my knowledge with all of you, and provide some articles about Ruby on Rails… I’ll work with you assuming that you have no knowledge about any programming language, I’ll start from the beginning on how to install and create ruby development environment on your computer, till you deploy your first rails application… It will take me a several posts but I’ll try my best to “at least” write 3 lessons per week.

Hope you are excited the way I’m about Ruby on Rails, If so kindly sign up for Ruby on Rails mailing list and you will get tutorials delivered to your inbox on weekly basis.

A web desktop or webtop is a desktop environment embedded in a web browser or similar client application. A webtop integrates web applications, web services, client–server applications, application servers, and applications on the local client into a desktop environment using the desktop metaphor. Web desktops provide an environment similar to that of Windows, Mac, or a graphical user interface on Unix and Linux systems. It is a virtual desktop running in a web browser. In a webtop the applications, data, files, configuration, settings, and access privileges reside remotely over the network. Much of the computing takes place remotely. The browser is primarily used for display and input purposes.

The terms “web desktop” and “webtop” are distinct from web operating system, a network operating system such as TinyOS or distributed operating system such as Inferno.

First of all I’d like to say Happy Ramadan & Ramadan Kareem to all my wife, my family, my friends, my coworkers, my team, and to all my blog readers. May Allah bless your days and accept all your prayers in this great month.

For those who don’t know what is Ramadan and why we celebrate this month, I’ve get some info for wikipedia about Ramadan (Arabic: ?????? Rama??n, Arabic pronunciation: [r?m?d???n]) (also Ramazan, Ramzan, Ramadhan, Ramdan, Ramadaan) is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and sexual activities from dawn until sunset. Fasting is intended to teach Muslims about patience, humility and spirituality and is a time for Muslims to fast for the sake of God (Arabic: ?????, trans: Allah) and to offer more prayer than usual. During Ramadan, Muslims ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance and help in refraining from everyday evils, and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds. As compared to the solar calendar, the dates of Ramadan vary, moving backwards about ten days each year depending on the moon. Ramadan was the month in which the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed to the Islamic Prophet Muhammad.

As a web developer, you probably know that you always need to use a testing environment to run your web application or to test a new feature to be added to your current application without messing out with your current on server running application.
Every Geek knows that there is no place like 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, so get the power of your computer and start your testing environment weather you are a PHP, Java Or even Ruby developer you can use one of the following list of top 6 free localhost web servers I’ve been using in the past few years.

1- XAMPP

Download from: www.apachefriends.org

Many people know from their own experience that it’s not easy to install an Apache web server and it gets harder if you want to add MySQL, PHP and Perl.
XAMPP is an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is really very easy to install and to use – just download, extract and start.

2- Nginx

Download from: www.nginx.org

Nginx is one of a handful of servers written to address the C10K problem. Unlike traditional servers, Nginx doesn’t rely on threads to handle requests. Instead it uses a much more scalable event-driven (asynchronous) architecture. This architecture uses small, but more importantly, predictable amounts of memory under load.
Even if you don’t expect to handle thousands of simultaneous requests, you can still benefit from Nginx’s high-performance and small memory footprint. Nginx scales in all directions: from the smallest VPS all the way up to clusters of servers.

3- Roxen

Download from: www.roxen.com
Roxen WebServer is a full-featured open-source web server distributed under the GPL license. It runs on a number of different operating systems including Windows, Linux, Solaris and Mac OS X.

4- Apache

Download from: www.apache.org
The Apache HTTP Server Project is an effort to develop and maintain an open-source HTTP server for modern operating systems including UNIX and Windows NT. The goal of this project is to provide a secure, efficient and extensible server that provides HTTP services in sync with the current HTTP standards.
Apache httpd has been the most popular web server on the Internet since April 1996, and celebrated its 15th birthday as a project this February. The Apache HTTP Server (“httpd”) is a project of The Apache Software Foundation.

5- Tornado

Download from: www.tornadoweb.org
Tornado is an open source version of the scalable, non-blocking web server and tools that power FriendFeed. The FriendFeed application is written using a web framework that looks a bit like web.py or Google’s webapp, but with additional tools and optimizations to take advantage of the underlying non-blocking infrastructure.

6- Lighttpd

Download from: www.lighttpd.net
Security, speed, compliance, and flexibility — all of these describe lighttpd (pron. lighty) which is rapidly redefining efficiency of a webserver; as it is designed and optimized for high performance environments. With a small memory footprint compared to other web-servers, effective management of the cpu-load, and advanced feature set (FastCGI, SCGI, Auth, Output-Compression, URL-Rewriting and many more) lighttpd is the perfect solution for every server that is suffering load problems. And best of all it’s Open Source licensed under the revised BSD license.

Conclusion

There are more than 100+ webservers applications that you can download and give them a try. but those 6 free open source high-performance http servers are based on my experience in using them. the oldest one i use is the XAMPP and i still use it till now. If you would like to recommend another software please name it on a comment below… Have a great day everybody…

A Network Management System (NMS) is a combination of hardware and software used to monitor and administer a network. NMS systems make use of various protocols for the purpose they serve. For example, SNMP protocol allows them to simply gather the information from the various devices down the network hierarchy. NMS software is responsible for identification of the problem, the exact source of the problem and solving them. The NMS systems not only are responsible for the detection of faults but also for collecting the statistics of the devices over a period of time. They may include a library where the previous network statistical data over a period of time is stored along with the problems and the solutions that worked in the past. This library can come useful in case a fault is found. NMS software can consult the library and search for the best possible method to resolve the problem.
